About six weeks ago, Amada, a lady who receives help from our Food Bank in Juarez, Mexico, came to us with her teenage daughter, Cristal.
Cristal could not eat. She felt like something was blocking her throat. She wanted to eat and was hungry, but when she went to chew her food and swallow, it would not go down. Amada had taken her to their doctor, but he couldn’t find any obstruction in her throat.
We told Amada she could bring Cristal to our clinic (called The Lord’s Clinic at the Food Bank) and have her see Dr. Ibarra who works with us there. When examining the girl, Dr. Ibarra could not find any problem either.
Two weeks went by and Cristal was still not able to eat. Amada returned very anxious. Cristal was getting weaker. We told her to take her daughter to the emergency room to seek help there. The medical staff at the hospital did some more extensive exams, checking her throat and esophagus, but again they said everything was fine. No one could figure out why Cristal was not able to eat.
Once again Amada came back to us – this time sobbing. “I feel so desperate! No one seems to be able to help us! What can I do for my daughter?” Cristal was now weaker than ever and kept passing out. “Can we pray with you?” we asked Cristal. “Yes.” Both mother and daughter were open and receptive to prayer. (It’s embarrassing that we had not prayed with her before this.) Our prayer was fervent and heartfelt, and lasted several minutes. We also gave her some sacramentals and some Scripture verses to read at home.
The following week, Amada and Cristal came to the Food Bank to share their good news. On their way home after the prayer, Amada had bought some sweet bread. Cristal asked her if she could have some. “Just try a little bit,” her mother said, knowing that Cristal had been choking and gagging whenever she tried to eat these last few weeks. Cristal started with a bite. No problem. And then another, and another – until she had polished off the whole bun!
She’s eating well now and very happy! All that feeling of blockage in her throat is gone. That same day she was healed, thank you Jesus!!
